Matt Syp is an engineering leader with 25 years of experience across software engineering, architecture and engineering leadership. He has led teams through scale, reorganization, platform modernization, operational complexity and high-growth product environments at companies including Carvana, Hinge Health, Dutchie and Synapse Health. His experience spans early-stage and pre-IPO companies, including an organization that grew from less than 100 engineers to roughly 400.
Across those roles, he developed Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders through growth, reorganization and increasing responsibility. That work has spanned automotive commerce, digital health, healthcare logistics, regulated retail, payments and SaaS platforms.
Through Matt Syp Consulting, he helps founders and engineering leaders create more leadership capacity, improve execution systems, strengthen technical direction and develop engineering managers and technical leaders who can operate with greater clarity and accountability.

- Carvana
- Senior Engineering Manager. Built Wholesale Engineering from one engineer into three teams, developing the long-term product and engineering vision, hiring strategy and leadership structure needed to support the organization as it grew.
- Hinge Health
- Engineering Manager in Care Team Products. Feature cycle time improved by roughly 20% after Matt introduced new development processes and technical standards.
- Dutchie
- Senior Engineering Manager for POS, payments and SaaS register platforms. Developed the initial concept for a payment architecture that allowed providers to be added or changed without rewriting the core payment system, then partnered with two Staff Engineers on the cross-area design. Also established database design guidelines, testing standards and an organization-wide support escalation process.
- Synapse Health
- Senior Engineering Manager for healthcare logistics delivery and fulfillment systems. Matt led an architecture redesign that increased order synchronization throughput by roughly 10x.
How I Work
I start with the constraint creating the most drag, not a standard framework. I look at where leadership capacity, technical direction or manager judgment is missing and build practical systems around that specific gap instead of adding process for its own sake.
The same approach applies to developing managers. The goal is not more theory. It is clearer 1:1s, more direct feedback, earlier attention to performance concerns and a shift from tracking tasks to building a leadership system that creates ownership and follow-through.
My technical background keeps me close to architecture and system health without needing to write every line of code myself. I use AI to accelerate planning, documentation and review while keeping people accountable for the judgment calls.
I work inside the system, stay close to the decisions and remain involved as plans turn into ownership and follow-through.
